Governor Andrew Cuomo said that he is finally ready to accept online sports betting in the state. Although New York is ready for online bookie platforms, some people call for an overhaul of the State Gaming Commission first.

Some sports betting solutions experts are skeptical about the NY State Gaming Commission’s ability to regulate sports betting. In 2016, Governor Cuomo signed the Interactive Fantasy Sports Bill that required fantasy sports operators to register with the Gaming Commission.

However, the Gaming Commission gave out temporary licenses to pre-existing operators. It failed to implement full registrations. By failing to fulfill the law’s intent, the commission turned the DFS market into a mess. Thus, DraftKings and FanDuel enjoyed a shared monopoly in the state.

However, defenders of the commission claimed that it failed to accept applications because of the ongoing litigation that invalidated the fantasy sports bill.

However, the NY Gaming Commission continues to appeal after two court rulings. The bill remains in full effect despite the actions made by the commission. Some industry insiders think that the agency doesn’t want new DFS operators in the state. Others believe that the commission doesn’t have the human resources to supervise the DFS sector.

Thus, becoming a bookie in New York might be a tall order. Online sports betting is a more competitive industry, and the commission might not effectively regulate it. As a result, some people want the governor to overhaul the commission before doing online sports wagering legal. It needs to be capable of handling sports betting in the state and accept applications from new players.
